Reflect

I am so sorry I could not be with you today. My daughter is very sick with a temp. of 104. Poor thing wanted me to hold her all day. I hope tomorrow she feels better. If not, to the doctor we go. No fun!

I have decided to allow you to reflect on these past 7 weeks and share what has been the most meaningful thing you have learned on this journey. I would also like you to include something you would like me to add or touch on when we return. Please reflect in one paragraph or more. You only need to post your own reflection. Since it is spring break next week, I will not require you to comment on each other's comments.

It has been a great ride so far!

Have a wonderful spring break!

Monica

But before you go... this is part of our oppression discussion from this week. It may surprise you...maybe not...

  1. I have learned so much the last 7 weeks, I don't even know where to start. The think the part that has affected me the most, is learning that our campus is discriminating against Deaf people. A big idea here and St. Scholastica is diversity and culture. So I would think they would know how to communicate and understand every culture. I hope we can find a way to inform the campus about the different cultures. I like that we blog instead of read books, it is more entertaining.

I like how laid back this class is also and I am beginning to feel more comfortable with the class to be able to express myself and actually engage in the conversation. I would like to learn more about how to communicate with Deaf people. I mean I know a little sign language, but I want to be more confident. Happy Spring Break! :)

  2. The biggest thing I've learned by being in this class is that just because you are Deaf, doesn't mean that you can't do anything. By having such a strong teacher as Monica, she has really showed me that Deaf people are very powerful and very strong-willed. I feel that it's necessary to spread the word about deaf culture and educate hearing people about it and how to respect Deaf people. I feel that hearing people don't know enough about Deaf people because I didn't know all that much before I took ASL and this Deaf Culture class. Deaf people have the same rights as anyone else, and anyone that says differently are close-minded and sorry to say...idiotic! I wish that more people took this class...especially other students that are not necessarily in ASL. This is such an important class to take to understand Deaf people and the opression they face on a day to day basis.

I would like to learn more about the oppression that Deaf people have faced and are currently facing today. I also think it would be good for the class if you could possibly bring in a Deaf friend who is willing to talk to our class and give their trials and experiences being a Deaf person. That would be helpful and enlightening :) Have a great break everyone!!

  3. I feel that this class has really opened up my mind regarding the deaf culture. I think the issue that has really effected me the most would have to be the idea of discrimination. I knew there was some but definitely not to this extent, & the fact that it us right here before our eyes - at CSS.

We need to educate others about the Deaf Culture as much as we can. We all see how much it effects Monica who is such a strong teacher, and so we need to do something.

I really enjoy learning about the Deaf Culture and am so glad that I had this opportunity :)

  4. cont'd.

I would like to learn more about the Deaf history. The movie we watched about the Jewish history was very eye opening, and I would like to learn more about the history.

    Thank you

  5. Before I took this class I thought I knew A LOT more about the deaf culture than I actually did. An eye opener for me was when Monica first talking about how their is a culture that deaf and hard of people have, just like we hearing people have a culture. I also think that is why I was drawn to the course.. I wanted to learn more about the culture. I have to say so far I have learned a lot more than I had anticipated when I was registering for this course. I have also learned a lot about my culture, and what needs to be changed in our educational system. I hope to hear more stories because that what I remember the most when I am learning. I am able to relate my education back to a story, and I am able to retell, and retell it to others with the hope they will retell it too. Thanks Monica!

  6. Having been in ASL 1 and 2 a lot of the information that has been presented has been a review for me. I love going back over it though because I pick up a little something different every time andI get to hear everyone's perspectives which vary from class to class. I would have to say the biggest things I have learned this year have been about the CODAs and about the lack of knowledge and what not on our campus. I wouldn't mind going a little more in depth about the CODAs and what their role is in the community. Also, could we hear about what you have done thus far as far as getting interpreters on campus. I remember you saying something about that before we left but it was just a short blip. Thanks
