Parallels
****There is no need to comment on each other's posts. The information that I want to see here is what you discovered in class while watching the film.******In class today we began to watch a film. I am sure several of you were very surprised that the film I picked to wrap up our semester lectures and discussion is "X-men III". However, the parallels to the Deaf community or any minority community are enormous. The message we are taught and are often raised to believe is that people most conform to the majority to live a fulfilling and satisfying life. What is often not realized is that this very conformity creates a life time of oppression and isolation.
What parallels do you see present in this film? Think about our lectures and discussions as you develop your responses. What is something you have taken from this class that you did not realize before? How will you take what you learned and apply it to your life?
Thank you for joining me on this journey so far. I look forward to your presentations very much.

So here is what I got from the movie: (please excuse the rough format of these notes)
ReplyDelete~so the mutants are the deaf and the humans are the hearing
~the humans want to cure the mutants of the powers and abilities.
~ some of the mutants really want this cure such as Rogue who has a power that doesnt allow her to touch anyone else without hurting them
~some of the mutants are outraged like Storm who feels that there is nothing wrong with mutants
~ Parents of Jean Grey, as well as other mutants, think/believe the powers and differences of the mutants are a disease or illness.
~ In the beginning of the movie Angel is trying to conform to society by trying to cut off his wings. He is in a particularly hard position because his dad is in politics fighting against the mutants
~ there are political meetings regarding mutant and human affairs
~ there are still divisions within the mutant community. A- wants to use their powers for good and help the humans and get along with the non-mutant community as well as educate them. B- says that they need to exterminate the humans before they exterminate the mutants
I think a parallel that I thought was cool, even though it is super simple, is that all of the mutants have different powers and this parallels how all D/deaf people have different degrees of hearing loss and are individuals all the same. Some of the mutants are more obvious and some are more involved just like Deaf people.
My response to the movie so far is:
ReplyDelete• Parents think the little girl in the beginning of the movie is sick because she has something wrong with her. She was power.
• The little boy in the beginning is trying to cut off his wings to try and conform to society, change to be like the rest of the people. He wants to be like his father and he is sorry because he is not exactly like him.
• They are trying to make a cure so people don’t end up a mutant or change them so they aren’t mutants anymore.
• They have there own community and school to teach the students that are like each other.
In my everyday life I have taken from this class is how people with different abilities are treated so differently. They are never just accepted for the way they are, parents and family members want to change them to be just like them. Why can’t people accept change? The easiest way to make life easier for someone is to change and help adept and make his or her life run as smoothly as you can. It shocked me the one day you told us in class that they weren’t going to renew your license because you are deaf that is ridicules. If you haven’t been in any accidents and it has been a proven fact that deaf people are better drivers than hearing people then treat them the same way.
I am going to apply this to my life by looking at things a little better before saying something or always coming to a solution to make it be like me. I also need to learn to adjust to other people and they way they are instead.
Thanks,

ReplyDeleteI agree with all your parallels from the movie to real life. When Monica said that we were watching this movie she wasn’t serious. I didn’t think that this movie really did relate the way deaf people are treated these days. Your favorite parallel is cool I never thought of that as that. It is true though all deaf people have a different degree of deafness.

My movie responses:
ReplyDelete*Mutants conforming to society by cutting off wings.
*All the explosions in the beginning showed our version of sound and Deaf peoples version of sound.
*This movie showed the mutant community as very close like the Deaf community.
* With the mutants having different powers than the majority to notice different things relates to Deaf and hearing people.
*The majority talked about the mutants as a disease and even have a "cure". Then the mutants got together to fight against the so called cure just like the Deaf community does when they keep an eye on the politics.
Well I have taken so much information in that I will be able to use in my career later on even when I am volunteering. I feel I understand the culture a lot better than I used to and will help my to not disrespect the Deaf culture.

ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about the relation of the mutants having their own school and residential schools. Learning about their community also helped me learn about our community and how we treat others.

The parallels I found from our lectures and the movie are-
ReplyDelete-The mutants try to change themselves to fit in with their peers just like children who are Deaf try to be more like their friends.
-The parents of the mutants think their difference is an illness much like parents of Deaf children who are not deaf themselves think it is a problem.
-People came up with a drug that will stop anyone from getting a mutation in the future much like the cochlear implant is trying to stop people from being Deaf.
-Being a mutant means fighting for your rights like in order to be accepted into the Deaf culture you have to be politically aware of the issues.
I have learned many things from this class, like how Deaf people are so proud to be Deaf. I also learned how one becomes involved and accepted into the Deaf culture and once in you share your talents with the rest of the community. In my professional career I will know how to approach a Deaf person, that they have the right to an interpreter and to talk to the Deaf person, not the interpreter. Most importantly I have learned that Deaf people are proud to be Deaf and being Deaf is not a disability!
There were many parallels that I found in this movie. Here are the parallels that i found in this movie:
ReplyDelete• The mutants are the minority like Deaf people. The humans are like the hearing majority. The humans want to change the mutants just like the hearing want to change the deaf.
• I noticed that the majority of mutants come from human families just like the majority of Deaf children come from hearing families.
• Humans think that being a mutant means you have an “illness” or a “disability”. The parents of Jean even though she was sick. The mutants don’t believe that they have an illness or a disability. They don’t think there is anything wrong with them. This parallel is similar to Deaf and hearing worlds. Many hearing people think Deaf people have an illness and often treat them that way or hearing people think that deaf people are disabled. Deaf people don’t think that way. Some believe there is something wrong with hearing people. Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do. They have no illness or disability.
• Another parallel is when the young mutant boy with wings tries to cut off his wings and hide the fact that he is a mutant to try and conform to society. Many deaf people are always conforming to society and to the hearing majority. When signing to hearing signers, deaf people often switch their signing to make it easier for the hearing people.
• The humans came up with a “cure” for mutants that would make them normal. This is a parallel to hearing people creating cochlear implants for deaf people to try and make them normal (like the hearing). They think they can “cure” deafness.
• The mutant cure was frowned upon by mutant community just like cochlear implants are frowned upon by the Deaf community
• When Storm says, “they can’t cure us, there is nothing wrong with us” to a fellow mutant she means that there is nothing wrong with being mutant. There is also nothing wrong with being Deaf. You can’t cure deafness. There is always going to be that culture, language, and ethics.
• Both the mutants and Deaf people have their own culture separate from society. They are considered the minority.
• When the “cure” first comes out to the public, the senator wants his son to be the first one to have the drug. He is forcing his son to become human saying, “it’s what you want.” It isn’t what the son wants though, it’s what the father/senator wants. This is a parallel to Deaf children receiving cochlear implants. Parents don’t know if it is what the child wants. They think they are doing what is best for the child but they don’t know if it is what they want. This is an example of forcing the “cure” upon Deaf people.
• When Mystique gets shot by the cure, she turns human and Magneto tells her that she is now “one of them” and won’t help her. This is a parallel to when deaf people get cochlear implants or start thinking like hearing people. They are classified as hearing by the Deaf community and may not receive support from the Deaf community.
There were many things similar between Deaf people and Mutants in this movie. I have learned a lot in this class and I was glad I could apply it to this movie.

Parallels:
ReplyDelete*Trying to conform to society (boy cutting off his wings)
*Parents think their daughter has an "illness"
*Finding a cure for the "disease" of the X gene of mutation
*The mutants wonder why they need to be "cured" when nothing is wrong with them
*The "cure" is voluntary
*The mutants have their own school & are fighting to keep their school open
Relatable quotes:
*"Who will you stand with. . .the humans or us?"
*"You are not one of us anymore." (Being "cured" from being a mutant)
*"The cure is meant for all of us."
I had never seen this movie before; but, I was surprised by how much I could relate it to Deaf culture. A lot of parallels were present in this movie between being "cured" from being mutant and getting a cochlear implant; both seem to have resulted in a loss of identity.
parallels:
ReplyDelete-they found a "cure" for the mutants, trying to make them like everyone else
-separating the mutants from the non mutants
-the little boy in the beginning tries to confrom to society by cutting his wings off
-the parents say the girl has an "illness"
-some mutants are for the cure while others are completely against it
This movie surprisingly fits in really well with what we are learning in Deaf Culture. I had never seen this movie or any of the X-Men movies but I enjoyed watching it and seeing how I could relate it to Deaf Culture. There were many parallels in this movie and I thought it was really interesting.
