Turning The Tables

Why do you think I picked this picture? Think about our class discussion this week, "Living in Other's World".

Hello Everyone,

I have been very impressed by your comments. They have been insightful, thought provoking and meaningful. I would like to turn the tables a bit and ask that you find an article that you feel connects to one of the videos that I have provided below. (you must watch all of them) (this article needs to be not directly connected) that you would like to share with the class. I would like it to to be something you feel should be shared and discussed and enhances the video you have selected. Summarize your article (link it as well), explain why you selected it, how it is meaningful to you, connect it to information we have learned in class as well as one of the videos below and finally create one question that you would like each student to respond to. You may not select a video that has already been chosen.

I look forward to this post very much!

I have found a variety of videos that I would like to share with you. They are all very different but still very connected. I have also found some comments on various videos that I would like you to read. I believe it is always important to read these comments posted below the videos because they more often than not show people expressing exactly what they think, feel or believe. Awareness that these beliefs, feelings, and thoughts exist helps us be aware of intolerance, lack of acceptance, ignorance (chosen or not), oppression, discrimination and many more. They help us understand more about Deaf people, Deaf pride, Deafhood, and Deaf Culture.

Comments below videos discussing Deaf Culture:

Comment #1: "You cannot simply say an impairment is automatically a culture. Let's say I have cancer. Now I am part of the cancer culture? No! It just means I have it. Oh, and, cultures have their own mindset/cliques that separates them from the mainstream aka no culture which is why there is a deaf culture. Simply because they choose to separate themselves from the hearing world."

Response #1:Cancer kills you. Deafness doesn't. Deaf people have their own culture and language. I actually have a DEGREE in Sign Language Studies and took CLASSES at University all about Deaf Culture.

Comment #2: First of all I have 2 masters degrees in sound engineering and music theory so im not "uneducated" second you have the same customs and behaviors as the country you protain to. if a group of people cant walk it does not mean they have their "own culture" they have an imparment so they go about doing things in a different way.

Response #2: What I mean is that you are uneducated about Deaf culture and ASL not necessarily what college degree you have. I have a Masters in Deaf Education and I grew up Deaf so just listen to what I have to say. People who don't walk dont have their culture because they dont have a language of their own while we do so that is a huge difference here. Deaf people have shared experience, genre, history, etc. that you will be surprised. Just read more about it, thanks.

These videos enhance what we discussed on Wednesday about living in others world (Earth and Eyeth). Please include in your posting which one effected you the most even if you did not select it for your posting. YOU MUST WATCH ALL OF THESE. There is not a required text so these blog postings are very important. All information can be on exams so be sure to take your time.

  1. WOW---where do I start? I thought ALL of these videos were great...well, great videos to dissect.

Video #1-I have seen the whole episode before, and I guess I thought it was cool how the girl who liked him studied sign language so she could talk to him. As for the girl who was trying out for the team, it did seem as if her hard of hearing was making an impact on her performance, and her ability to follow tasks. Obviously the people in charge did consider everyones abilities because they did not have an interpreter.

Video #2- Very cute, and for me, it just SHOWED me how deaf people communicate over the phone. Again, its just decreasing the stereotype and opening up the eyes of people who are uneducated when it comes to this.

Video #3- I guess there is not a WHOLE lot to say. I think this video says it all, there are some people who are ignorant, and there are some people who are just plain ol' stupid. This video tells me that they think just because this person is deaf that they have to make goofy noises at him, as if he is dog or something.

Video #4- I LOVED this video. I am going to make my whole family watch it too! This video really opened my eyes in soo many ways. Sure we learn different things in class, but actually getting to see the lifestyle is great. The older son who was hearing expressed how his parents do not understand how hard it is sometimes, and I think he is probably right. He has to experience things that his parents never had to experience, and it is hard for his parents to see his point sometimes. It seemed like his mother was quite adamant on getting his friend to come over, but I would probably be the same was as her, is he embarrassed? what? I think part of it is he does not want to get into a situation where it is even possible for people to judge him or his family, so he keeps his personal life personal. I am sure it would be hard for him, and his family.. but it was also nice to see his siblings going to an all deaf school. It must be nice going to a place where everyone is like you in someway.

video #5- This is another video I will be showing to my family. It was nice to see some humor out of it because I think humor is a great stepping stone to open peoples eyes to the truth. And maybe there have been commericals like this before and I just didn't notice, but I know now i appreciate commericals that are diverse.

Video #6- Again, deaf people come from different backgrounds like everyone else, and this video just instills that concept. He is changing what it means to be deaf by expressing his feelings through ASL. He said he will be the first, and last deaf rapper.

Video #7- Honestly, because of the speed she was signing I could not pay attention to what was being said because I was sooo mesmerized. But overall, it seems as if she took her gift and turned it into something special by becoming apart of a t.v series.

Video #8- Someone famous representing the deaf culture is a great way to get people to look beyond themselves because they see someone they admire representing the language/culture. Jackie Chan is known to be very generous when it comes to his money, and doing different ads, so I think its great.

Video #9- This video shows that everyone has a gift, and what they do with their gift is up to them. Talent does not come from a physical characteristic, but from dedication, and hard work.

  2. Continued... Video #10- I did not get very much from this video, but I did understand how they are basically two very big things, as we already discussed in class. I still do not know what "deafhood" is though. anyone?

Video #11- Great musician, he expressed his feelings about us hearing people's perspective of deaf people. I thought he did a great job because he was not coming off as bitter, but instead he told a story that educated me along the way.

Of all of these videos, video number four was the most informative, I think it did a great job of showing the struggles they face as a family being deaf, and hearing. When the mom said how she faces this discrimination everyday I could only empathize with her. Though I face discrimination because I am a female, african-american, and my fiance' is white... I can not say people pity me everyday, That would be an AWFUL feeling. Everyone feeling sorry for you?

But when I thought about it more when the mom said how she receives pity when she tells a waiter that she is deaf. I think my automatic reaction would be sorry too... and not sorry because they are deaf, but sorry because I inconvenienced her. Also, I think it is common that we hearing people feel SOME empathy.. Just a thought.

The video I found on youtube was interesting not because of the content necessarily, but because of someones comment. " no one can hear you scream" I know they were just trying to be funny, but they raised a good point. It does not seem as if there are enough safety precautions to ensure everyones safety. It would be impossible and unnecessary to follow every deaf student around, but I think that a school designed JUST for deaf students would have increased safety measures for the fact almost 100% of the people there are deaf.

  3. Awesome videos - thank you Monica for finding these!

Video #1 – I actually seen that episode of True Life & I really enjoyed watching the guests go through challenges & joy. I could not imagine myself being a dancer & not being able to hear the music being played, or not being able to hear anything & then all of a sudden you hear everything, & have to figure out what sounds are. I give the young woman mad props that she is as successful as she is. People should really understand that being deaf is not a disability, they are just like you & me, they just do things in a different matter.

Video #2 – That video made me smile! It just me again how the TTY works & it’s amazing. I hope people being & continue to be educated about deafness & stop stereotyping.

Video #2 – I think this video is the worst video – how insulting to the deaf community! I can just imagine how Monica’s son felt while watching this video. These girls, along with others really need to be educated or maybe just a documentary & show their daily lives, because it is very interesting. Show some respect! My goodness how old are you? I have to laugh, they just think they are so funny, but in reality they are disrespectful. They need to be educated & maybe go & meet their neighbor & then they won’t be so judgmental regarding deafness or any disability no matter what it may be.

Video #3 – I really hope this shows makes it onto TV – it just shows how far the deaf community has really came. When the nurse stated that her daughter was not responding to the hearing test & the mom said, “Oh that’s okay, she’s deaf,” I wonder what the nurse was thinking at that moment or if she was educated about deafness. Then when her son was born & they said, “Congratulations! Your son is hearing,” I wonder also what everyone was thinking regarding appropriateness. What a great show! I really do hope that someday that air that episode in awareness.

Video #4 – Every time I see this video I always want to show people. The commercial just shows how creative & intelligent in thinking outside of the box, how people are. I am so glad this commercial was aired during the Super Bowl a few years ago! Hopefully many people saw it.

Video #5 – This video shows that you can come from just about nothing & succeed just no other! His goal that to let the hearing people know that deaf people can do anything is so true! It just shows how far the deaf community has come – actresses/actors, singers/songwriters etc. I hope he succeeds.

Video #6 – She is a great actress & she is really interesting in what she went through, the challenges & the accomplishments. What a great inspiration for all. Her father must have been her role model – great advice in regards of finishing school & succeeding.

Video #7 – I didn’t know Jackie Chan was deaf! How interesting! Great commercial

Video #8 – Beautiful! What a great message as well to all. Again just shows how far the deaf community has come.

Video #9 – You can see the passion that him and other commenter’s have for the support & success in their community.

Video #10 – Sean Forbes is amazing – I remember watching him in Dignitas last year & just how in awe everyone was while watching it regarding how amazing he is, he celebrates his deafness, he’s proud of him culture. He tells stereotypes regarding hearing people & he does it great.

Video #11 - He definitely has courage & seems to not really care what others have to think about him – he loves football & seems happy that he is successful.

  4. You only need to select one of the videos for this discussion. Be sure to watch them all but select the one that you connect to the most. (you can only select one that has not yet been selected already) Then you are to find an article that you feel connects with your video well. Please read the posting again carefully. I really did enjoy reading your comments though!

  5. I decided to find an article relating to the last youtube video. I found an article about two young men who are playing football for Berkar. The article begins by going through all the things some people hear while at a football game & then they are suddenly gone. The article walks you through a typical day for the team - the strengths & disadvantages that every team has. This team is different - it embraces each & every team member. I think it is really cool that the teammates get together & make signs for plays so everyone can understand what is going on.

I just really liked the video & the meaning behind it - anyone can overcome anything if they put their mind to it, & succeed at anything.

  6. I chose the third video "Deaf Neighbor". I find this extremely disrespectful. It makes me sick to my stomach that people can be this rude! Although I absolutely hated the video, I loved the comments beneath it. I think these girls deserve to be told what idiots they are for making this. There are many Deaf men and woman who commented on this video and made it clear that although they do not care what these girls think about them, they want to make it clear that they are successful! That with attitudes and behavior such as this, that they displayed in the video will cause them to go no where in life. No one is going to want to higher disrespectful people to work at their jobs, and schools wont allow things like this. I think that the schools they go to should be informed of this video and take action, it maybe an out of school activity, but there is no appropriate excuse for this! One comment underneath the video that really stood out to me and made me smile was when a woman said "im glad u made this vlog here because i TRULY enjoys read eveybody's comments......music to my eyes, that right im deaf." I love the "music to my eyes comment"!!!!!!!
I don't have an article to go with this but I do have an experience that goes along with it perfectly! In the 8th grade we had a deaf boy join our grade. He had an implant, but he had just got it his 8th grade year so he still had no idea what any words were when people spoke to him. He had a translator and his language was ASL. There were only a few of us who went out of our way to learn as much as we could from him. But we also had a ton of boys in the grade who would make fun of him.. His name was Matthew, since ASL was his language he had never taken speech or anything so once he got the implant he began to try his best to speak but when ever he did it was always the same sound of "baah". I found myself understanding him a lot due to this facial expressions and how he signed, i, personally found him to be an amazing kid and thought he was EXTREMELY talented and we actually spent a lot of time hanging out.
Like the 2 girls in the video, we always had disrespectful boys who would tease him. They would sit behind him and make hand movements as if they were signing and yell "baaah baah baaaaah" as they continued to make the movements. I remember one day in-particular, a friend and I became so offended by these boys and their actions that we asked Matthew's translator to come to the office with us to report their actions. After doing so the two boys got suspended and lost a lot of respect from their peers. After that year Matthew did not return to our school, he is now attending his senior year in a school for the deaf (I don't remember which)

This video just took me back to the 8th grade and that sick feeling I would get when the boys would make fun of matt. I think these 2 girls deserve to be suspended for a few days and as they are suspended, not spend their time at home, they should need to spend their days with a deaf person, or learning about the deaf culture. People like this NEED a reality check!!!

  7. Kara,

Question, is everyone suppose to find an article in addition to the ones we were suppose to have for last week? Or what exactly are you looking for?

    Thank you!

  9. I liked a good handful of these videos, but the one that always leaves my with my jaw on the floor is the Chinese blind and deaf performers. I have seen the whole show with the deaf performers who are dressed in the gold dresses (The one where it looks like the one person has 100 arms). This video didn't go into the detail on how they coordinate their performance. As seen in the video they have some side signers to help them keep in cadence, but there is more to that. Just like any performer these people go through hours and hours of practice. One of the more unique ways they keep together it my breathing on the backs of each others necks. I can't find the video that explains this better, but ill search more and hopefully I can find it. For now here is a link for the whole performance. :)

I was going to pick this video as well but you beat me to it. I too got extremely pissed of when I watched this video. I just don't understand the point of the girls acting in such a way. At first, I really really felt bad for the deaf man. But, after I read the comments below I had a different perspective on the whole thing. I love how the deaf took power away from these girls and made them look like the silly ones. They said these girls may be trying to tease the deaf man, but like they said, he doesn't know what is really going on or if it is even happening....so who really is the fool? Now I'm not saying that that fact makes it right, because it doesn't in the least bit, but I think the comments give a more positive light to the situation.

Also, thank you for sharing you story about the deaf student you had in your class. I think it is great that you were able to stick up for him and make the issue known in the school. I think we all can learn for this, in that we all can stand up for someone who is being bullied. Not just someone who is deaf, but for anyone in general.

  11. I'm really enjoying looking at everyone's reactions to the videos, whether it was positive or negative. I think Monica picked these videos to evoke both pleasant AND unpleasant feelings about Deaf people and their culture and how hearing people misunderstand them. I decided to look more into the whole "lip reading" idea presented briefly by the video about the Deaf Canadian actress because the reporter said she was known for her excellent lip reading abilities. This concept could also be applied to the Deaf football player as well as the two teenagers from the MTV show.

Here is a link for a program on how to improve your lip reading skills and how to learn how to lip read. So please read through this and see what you think...is this something that we should be educating Deaf people on? Or is this use of communication completely pointless and useless??

I'm curious to see what everyone thinks!!

  12. Amanda--thanks for posting the whole video for us to watch! It's such a beautiful thing to see. It really is amazing how they coordinated all of this without being able to hear each other and hear cues of what to do next. This really proves that being deaf isn't a set back or a disadvantage...Deaf people can truly do anything that hearing people can..sometimes even better!!

  13. Jordann~

Very interesting link. I'm not sure what to think of these videos. I like the fact that they are not saying this is just for deaf people, they almost make it seem like it is for anyone. Personally I think it would be fun to get the tapes just to see what they are like, but I think this is just another way for people to eves drop on others conversations.

  15. I'm not sure where to even start, after watching all of these videos I thought that they were all very interesting!

But, if I had to chose I would pick the video Sean Forbes "I'm Deaf" I found it very inspiring to listen and see him sign how he really feels about some issues. I looked up the lyrics and from what I understand is that he is explaining that feeling music beats is something so intense inside of him and he is explaining that he can still feel things like the wind through his ears, just because he is hard of hearing doesn't mean he can't experience things, he may just do this in a different way. Here are a few lines from his song that I thought were really neat... Now there’s people out there Telling you what you can’t do “You can’t overcome, You got too much to prove” I never listened. Which I feel is very powerful, people are faced with this everyday, someone telling them they can't so something and I think that it really makes a statement when those people can be proven wrong.

Here is a quick article and Video on Sean Forbes. He is talking about his journey and how he wants to inspire people who are deaf and hard of hearing to pursue music. Obviously this relates to the video, but I also feel that it is very important for people to have more knowledge about this and to feel encouraged to do something they love and the words "can't" shouldn't be held against them.

  17. I did notice that I only NEEDED to pick ONE article, but I had something to say about all of them. Anyway, like Natalie, video # 3 was sickening, and I agree that the comments below the video were well deserved, I do not see how they could have thought they would get positive feedback. Again, it just shows ignorance at another level, and though most people disliked the video, there were still some who liked the video. It was just another eye opening video-- like "wow, people think that way." One can never underestimate ignorance...!

  18. Amanda- yeah I don't think it's only for deaf people, but it's interesting that they have programs for lip reading...like you mentioned, it's quite possibly for people to evesdrop! It interested me so I'm glad you commented on it!
